I was speaking with a good friend last week about this mindset and going through the process of school. We sometimes struggle with the desire to want to hurry up and be done for various reasons. Whether it’s so we can get the better paying job or go on to have more free time to do things or begin to fulfill the dreams for our lives that God has given us. We all want something to be better or ready for the promotion at work or whatever the case may be as quick as we can. While I struggle with this probably just as much as anyone during the course of the conversation God showed us a great analogy I wanted to share with you to help you along the way!
Now as believers in the New Testament we are often characterized as sheep by the Lord. In John 10:1-30 Jesus teaches how He is the True Shepherd and we are the sheep. In Hebrews 13:20 Jesus is again called the great Shepherd of the Sheep. Jesus taught by comparing people as sheep, for example, the parable of the Lost Sheep in Luke 15:1-7. This imagery is seen throughout the Gospels and teachings of Christ partly because that is what the people of Jesus’ day could relate to. Many were shepherds in the Middle East and understood all that was implied for Him to called a shepherd and us as His sheep.
The reason I said all that to say this: We, the sheep, like sheep, can only go where the Shepherd leads. The shepherd moves at his own chosen pace to get the sheep that he is guiding to the destination He has in mind. Sheep don’t question when they are led to move and is the ONLY animal that will willingly go to the slaughter even after smelling death. We are the sheep, following the Great Shepherd Jesus Christ. He has a great plan (Jeremiah 29:11-12) for your life (Psalm 139:16) and we can’t rush His plan. I don’t know about you but I choose to stay on the path He has for me, even if I don’t understand it at times, because I am the sheep, following my Great Shepherd Jesus Christ.
